Case Study 1: The Brochure
Bill is working on writing a brochure for the child care and education program where he works. He knows that the brochure will be used to advertise the program and will hopefully encourage families to enroll their children there. He has written up this first draft for the brochure:
The Sunshine Child Care and Education Program offers a quality developmentally appropriate experience in a loving, supportive environment. Children and families benefit from our trained, caring staff of experienced teachers. This program is perfect for any child!
Our center provides a warm, welcoming setting where children are free to explore their world in a safe and healthy manner. We utilize the latest research to aid children's learning and development in the most effective and responsible way possible. Families are a vital part of the Sunshine Program and are considered our partners.
"The Sunshine Program provides my daughter with the same degree of care and attention that I do at home. I couldn't imagine sending her anywhere else."
--Victoria Stevens, Sunshine Program Parent
The Sunshine Program: Where Children Are as Important to Us as They Are to You.
In addition to this text, he prepared short biographies of some of the teachers and also included a program calendar for the coming year.
What kind of information should Bill add to the brochure?
Which items in the brochure should be removed?
What other changes might Bill want to consider making to the brochure?
Case Study 2: Andy
Among the recent group of applicants to the program is a three-year-old boy named Andy. He is like most other children his age with one noticeable exception-he suffers from a relatively mild form of deafness. Other than his hearing loss, Andy is a healthy, typically developing boy who seems to be ready for the program. His family is able to pay the tuition, and his parents have expressed an interest in volunteering in the classroom. There are a few more families interested in the program than the center will be able to accept.
Is the center obligated to enroll Andy?
What types of changes would need to be made to accommodate Andy?
Why would it be important to fully include Andy in the program if he was admitted?
