Case Stuty "Brittany and Her Family"
Brittany is a 15-year-old African American female. She recently ran away from home and showed up at her best friend Lindsey's house at midnight, asking if she could stay with her. After a few days, Lindsey's mother was questioning how long Brittany planned on staying at their home. Lindsey convinced Brittany to talk to her about what was going on at home and why she refused to return. Brittany disclosed to her best friend that her stepfather had been sexually abusing her since she was 12 years old. Lindsey, concerned for her friend's well-being, told a guidance counselor at school about Brittany's abusive family environment. The school guidance counselor contacted Child Protective Services (CPS).Brittany told the CPS investigator that she was afraid to tell her mother about the abuse because her stepfather said that no one would believe her and she would be sent to foster care if she told. Brittany further indicated that she did not want to upset her mother, who had been taking care of her grandmother for years until recently, when her grandmother passed away. Brittany stated that she would not, under any circumstances, return home. She said she would rather go to the teen runaway shelter if she cannot stay with Lindsey. During an unannounced visit by the CPS investigator and a police officer, Brittany's mother seemed ambivalent about the allegations and stated that she believed Brittany was angry with her stepfather and "might have exaggerated what happened." Brittany's mother indicated that Brittany "has a problem with lying" and may have provoked her husband because she "dresses like a grown woman." It was noted by investigators that Brittany's stepfather is the sole provider for the family, which includes Brittany's three younger siblings. Brittany's mother has been grieving the loss of her own mother and has limited social support.
