Managing People
Effective teamwork and collaboration require careful management. Have you ever worked on a team project in which you held meetings that seemed unproductive? Perhaps a lot of talking took place, but no action resulted. Scenarios like this define inefficient leadership within a collaborative group. Even highly intelligent and creative individuals may need some guidance in order to achieve outcomes.
In the public health sector, a wide variety of professional, personal and cultural backgrounds exist. This means that different individuals may view ideas and challenges from different perspectives. For this Shared Activity, you will focus on utilising diversity as a public health leader to improve a health organisation. Centring on a specific challenge facing public health organisations, you will recommend plans for facilitating the collaborative solution efforts using a team of diverse individuals.
To complete this Shared Activity:
Create a discussion post in which you address the following:
Briefly summarise a challenge facing public health today.
Briefly summarise a hypothetical team of at least three members who can work with you to solve this challenge.
Each team member must have a different professional background.
Present a plan for approaching and resolving your selected challenge with your hypothetical team. Be sure to consider the following:
How will you leverage the professional backgrounds of your team in your plans?
What sort of challenges might you face when collaborating with the diverse members of your team?
How will you overcome these challenges and facilitate collaboration in the most effective way possible?
Review your fellow colleagues' postings and post a response to at least two of your colleagues' comments. Your response post should address the following:
Likelihood of success based on similar plans used by other public health leaders
Plan efficiency as compared to similar plans used by other public health leaders
Identifiable challenges overlooked in regards to their diverse team members
Provide suggestions for improving your colleague's plan for overcoming their summarised challenge.
Support any claims you make.
Participate in this Shared Activity only during the period of this unit to ensure that you and your colleagues can keep track of one another's postings and maintain a focused, collaborative discussion. Review the Syllabus and Shared Activity Rubric for information on how your contributions to the Shared Activities will be graded in this module. In each unit, you will receive feedback from your Faculty Member on your participation in the Shared Activities, focusing on your contributions to the learning community. In Unit 6, your Faculty Member will provide final feedback and a final grade on your Shared Activity contribution throughout the module.
Individual Assignment
Required
Human Resources Challenges
Considering the value people add to any organisation, human resource management requires its own subset of leadership in public health. In human resource management, some of the most common challenges consist of staffing, recruitment, career development and training. As a leader in public health, you must familiarise yourself with the challenges of human resources, as building and optimising human capacity for public health work is a familiar challenge across the world.
If you recall some of the topics covered earlier in this module, a characteristic of leadership is the ability to innovate. As a public health leader, you need to be able to find solutions to problems and take advantage of opportunities as they appear. To address all of the challenges that arise, you will also need a team of qualified people to help.
In this Individual Assignment, you will examine the global state of affairs in public health. You will research trends in the health sector and seek out opportunities for improving public health in a region of your choosing. This could be an existing challenge in that region, which you need to address, or a way to improve the quality of life there in general. You will also expand your staff in order to reach your goals. You will complete this assignment by identifying human resource management and leadership challenges and devising ways to address them.
Submit a paper in which you address the following:
Describe a challenge or opportunity associated with improving public health in a selected region of the world.
Explain a plan for addressing the challenge or opportunity and how it will improve public health.
Identify the staffing needs required to execute your plan.
Justify the need for each team member.
Describe and evaluate (in terms of likelihood to occur) leadership and human resource management challenges that could arise managing this new staff.
Suggest models from your unit readings, or your own research, that could address these challenges.
Evaluate the effectiveness of these models.
You should fully state and justify any choices or assumptions that you make using the suggested readings for this unit as well as your own research. Include references to any sources you have used. All sources should be cited using Harvard Referencing Style.
Note:
This Individual Assignment will become a part of your Final Project. You will receive feedback on this work from your Faculty Member and will be expected to incorporate any suggestions into the Final Project.
