Question: Near the end of "Why so many American men want to be the 'good guy with a gun'" Jennifer Carlson writes: "Loosening gun laws, it turned out, was much easier than fixing the fundamentals of a broken economy or remaking the racial politics that criminalized boys and men of color. In contrast to the vanishing security of a breadwinning wage and the elusive promise of a post-racial America, guns appear as uncannily concrete, dependable, and durable." Specify how this statement relates to the conclusions she drew from the field research she undertook in Michigan's Wayne County with both suburban white male gun owners and urban Black male gun owners. Identify and explain at least one way in which Murakawa's scholarship (featured in Powerpoint slides, the "Racial innocence..." article, and the Behind the News interview) OR Moody's "The Roots of Racist Policing" might be used to inform or flesh out Carlson's statement.
One could credibly argue that Murakawa and Moody alike, and Akbar as well, deploy analytical paradigms that tend to overemphasize police as armed enforcers of an unequal and unjust social order, and in so doing conceptually neglect the exceptional degree to which many everyday residents of the United States own firearms for a wide variety of purposes. Some of those purposes might be consistent with upholding the unequal and unjust social order, others might be consistent with merely adjusting to that order, and yet others might even be about challenging that order. Briefly reflect on the two preceding sentences, explicitly drawing on at least one of the following articles - MacGillis, LaFrance, Allam, Parkin et al - AND either the The New Pro-Gun Generation video resource or the The Making of a Boogaloo Boi video resource.
