Topic
You are the environmental manager for a regional waste water treatment company that utilises conventional technology (Figure 1 below; including primary settlement and aerobic biological treatment) in most of its treatment works.
Figure 1: Typical waste water treatment plant
Following the review of priority substances for the Water Framework Directive, you are asked to write a report that briefly explains the environmental importance of selected priority substances and to review the theoretical capability of your organisation to achieve EU Environmental Quality Standards (EQS) which was taken effect from 2018
Requirement
• Choose one substance from Table 1 below.
• Briefly outline the environmental importance of the substance (why is it seen as a priority substance).
• Assess if your typical WWT plant should be capable of reliably removing the substance, describe the mechanisms and also outline potential improvements if any exist. (Especially if the plant is not able to remove the substance,) provide a review of upgrades to the plant which would make this possible and how they work.
• Provide an assessment on whether end-of-pipe treatment is the best way of dealing with this substance or if catchment management options might be more suitable. Outline potential catchment management options.
Specifically,
1) Two sides of A4 Fact-sheet (excluding summary, index and appendices; if any). Any appendices must not contain essential material but only supplementary information (and will thus not attract the same marks as material in the main body of the text). Ideally, the fact-sheet will condense the information that you researched into a visually appealing and easy to read format. Think of it more as a leaflet/flyer/handout than a report. However, a good structure is still important, and a well laid out fact-sheet might, for example, consist of:
- Title
- Summary
- Main body (introduction, review, conclusions)
- References
- Appendices.
2) PPT slides (max 8 slides excluding references) that outlines the environmental importance of the substance, techniques for removal, etc. as indicated in the "Topic" section.
You are required to demonstrate your ability in the skills of presentation of factual content of coursework and critical analysis of the case study. We will assess the quality of both the fact sheet and power point slides.
