Report: Practical Application
The Task
Write a report demonstrating your study, understanding, and use of course ideas and exercises in which the primary goal is for you to develop a detailed and in-depth understanding of your own implicit leadership theory.
The assessment contains four sections.
Part (a)
In part (a), you need to demonstrate a clear and concise understanding of the ideas associated with implicit leadership theory, the social construction of leadership, and leadership categorisation theory as discussed in MGNT903. This includes a definition of the terms, an explanation of the nature of these constructs, and a discussion of their impact on people's behaviour. You are strongly advised to read and integrate lessons from the teaching materials associated with Weeks 5, 7, 8, and 9 of the subject that are listed in the Moodle site in this part of your answer. You are required to run each of these four questions through ChatGPT (see Note 1), record the output in the assignment (these do not count against the word limit), and then explain how the subject material aligns or differs to the output from ChatGPT. The purpose of the comparison is for you to demonstrate your detailed and in- depth understanding of ideas from MGNT903 on these topics.
a. What is the social construction of leadership?
b. What is the nature of implicit leadership theories?
c. What is leadership categorisation theory and how is it relevant to understanding implicit leadership theories?
d. Why is it important to develop an understanding of your own implicit leadership theory?
Part (b)
In part (b), you need to explain to the reader the process (i.e., the exercises you did, the readings you read, the videos you watched, the reflective activities you attempted etc.) you went through to develop an understanding of your implicit leadership theory. DO NOT discuss the nature of your implicit leadership theory here; just explain the process. Good answers will do more than provide a description of the process; they will also discuss the purpose and the strengths and weaknesses of the various methods used to elicit implicit leadership theories. You should also say a little about yourself and your leadership context to put the assignment in context. Drawing on material delivered through the MGNT903 Moodle subject website during Weeks 8 and 9 of the subject:
a. Briefly explain your own leadership context (i.e., who are you and where do you want to be seen as a leader by others?)
b. Briefly describe the exercises from Weeks 8 and 9 that can be used to surface someone's implicit leadership theory
c. Explain why these exercises work to surface someone's implicit leadership theory
Part (C)
In part (c), you need to describe your own implicit leadership theory. A simple description will not gain many marks. Instead, you need to substantiate the description of your implicit leadership theory with data such as data from your answers to the exercises, scores, or other observations to give the reader confidence that you have developed a full and deep understanding of the nature of your implicit leadership theory. You should demonstrate that you have attempted the various exercises in Weeks 8 and 9 and include copies/photographs etc. of your responses to these activities. You should include depictions/photos etc. of your rich pictures and cognitive map. By the end of the section, you need to have convinced the reader that you have developed a rich, detailed, and nuanced understanding of your own implicit leadership theory. Explain the results of your attempts at the exercises in Weeks 8 and 9 of MGNT903 to surface your own implicit leadership theory. Include photographs of your rich picture, cognitive map, and responses to the other exercises in your answer. Drawing on the results from these exercises, conclude this section by providing a detailed and in-depth description of your own implicit leadership theory.
Part (d)
Part (d) requires you to extrapolate beyond the end of the subject to consider how you might continue to develop as a leader. Your answer should be grounded in subject theory, made relevant to your own situation, and be internally consistent with your earlier answers in this assignment. In particular, you should draw on the material in Week 10 and the associated readings to enrich your discussion, particularly those related to authenticity and leader development. You might discuss the inherent contradiction between authenticity and the image management implied in the socially constructed approach to leadership as it applies to you. Better marks will be awarded to more strongly argued answers that draw on subject theory, observations, and logic.
