Question: BT is a 47-year-old man admitted to the hospital with prostatic hyperplasia requiring transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). The procedure is completed without complication and BT returns to the ward with an indwelling catheter in place. It remains in situ for three days

After the catheter is removed, BT experiences urinary frequency and a burning sensation during micturition. A urine sample is taken and sent to the microbiology laboratory for analysis. The microbiology report shows the following:

Microscopy: white blood cells ++; Gram-positive rods

Culture: Pseudomonas aerginosa

Sensitivity: amoxicillin: resistant; cephalexin: sensitive; trimethoprim: resistant; gentamicin: sensitive
