Question: Within the Discussion Board area, write that respond to the following questions with your thoughts, ideas, and comments. This will be the foundation for future discussions by your classmates. Be substantive and clear, and use examples to reinforce your ideas.
Strain theory is a theory that aims to explain criminal behavior. It proposes that pressures from social factors increases the likelihood that a person may commit a crime. These social pressures include poverty, a poor education, and more.
One factor that is not often discussed with strain theory is the failure to achieve goals as a major cause of strain. Agnew identified two additional sources of strain: the presentation of noxious stimuli and the removal of positively valued stimuli. Examples of presentation of noxious stimuli would be the following:
An abusive parent
A very tough instructor
A very demanding employer
Examples of the removal of positively valued stimuli would be the following:
Losing a job
Getting a divorce
Filing for bankruptcy
Watch this video that presents a quick overview of the general strain theory: General Strain Theory Explains Why We Engage in Criminal Behavior.
Using what you learned this week, address the following:
Briefly explain the general strain theory.
Give an example of the removal of a positive stimuli and how it leads to an act of crime.
Do you think you would react if you had the same positive stimuli removed?
