Technology has had a huge impact on learners who historically had limited access to schools--those whom education kept in the margin. Learners who were poor or who needed to work could not physically get to school, but now the Internet comes to them. Learners with dyslexia or vision or hearing limitations can now find devices that read or write for them. Students who were marginalized--kept on the limits or edge of education--can now be in the mainstream of education. Historically marginalized groups are the focus of your final project in Week 13. We will each start researching one group of marginalized learners now in preparation for that project.

Write a brief essay describing one type of historically marginalized learners and how technology can support that specific group's education.

First, select one historically marginalized group from the lists below.

Learners with special needs-select one of these categories:

Second, identify the ways technology can support instruction for learners with the handicapping condition you selected. Look for specific technologies or techniques. Consult the websites below, the resources we've studied in this course, and any other resources you can find. Research studies are preferable to opinion articles.

Third, identify specific products or websites that support this type of marginalized learner. You will need to search the Internet for websites that advertise products or websites that directly address these learners. The informational websites above are general references, not specific remedies or supports. We are looking for specific links or techniques using technology. Your will link to two or three of these specific products or websites in the body of your essay.

Finally, write an essay in which you briefly describe the handicapping condition and describe at least three technologies that could support learners with this condition instructionally. Include links to the example websites or digital products that illustrate the technology characteristics that support the group you chose. Label your links to example websites of products as I did above; do not paste raw, messy urls into the body text of your essay.
