When we are immersed in an environment long enough we tend to "tune out" certain stimuli.
For example, if we are consistently in a room where a clock is ticking we eventually no longer attend to the sound. Conversely, when we are exposed to certain stimuli we may become overly sensitive to it (sensitized).
For example, if we are wearing a new pair of shoes and start to get a blister we may become overly focused on the particular foot the blister is on, it becomes increasingly annoying over time.
Focus on the environment you are currently sitting in and respond to the following questions in a 3 to 4 page APA formatted essay:
Briefly describe the environment you are currently in. What sounds do you notice now that you are paying full attention to your environment?
What sounds did you previously "tune out" but are now aware of because they have been brought to your attention via this assignment?
What sounds in your current environment are you sensitized to (e.g. what sounds are annoying or painful)?
Define habituation and sensitization. Include discussion of the primary elements of each and why they occur.
