Overview of the Research Proposal -

Food waste Management

This course requires the development of an original research proposal that applies the concepts and knowledge associated with the research designs, methods, and practices covered by the coursework. The proposal will describe an empirical research project that you design involving an issue or topic that is of interest to you. The proposal will present a research problem and will describe the research methods and procedures that would be used to investigate the problem.

Research Proposal Development Process

A formal written research proposal is due at the end of the 2018 Spring semester. The research proposal will be developed incrementally, by major section, over a period of several weeks, with the final proposal due by April 28, 2018. The assignment must be submitted electronically as a typed Microsoft Word document file. As part of this process, you will provide me with a preliminary copy of each section of your research proposal according to the schedule provided. I will mark up, correct, and/or otherwise comment on your preliminary assignments in order to provide direction and suggestions for improvement. The intent is for you to incorporate my corrections and comments for each preliminary section into that section and then combine all of the revised sections to create a formal paper, properly formatted according to the sixth edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (also commonly referred to as the APA Style Manual or APA Style Guide).

Getting Started on Writing Your Research Proposal

Information about the Research Proposal can be found within the "Research Proposal Information" folder found on the course's Home page. There are four items located within the "Research Proposal Information" folder:

1. An "Overview of the Research Proposal" folder

2. A "Research Proposal Content and Formatting" folder

3. An "Examples of Research Papers" folder

4. A "Research Proposal Evaluation Forms" (folder)

  • General directions and guidelines for selecting a topic and for writing the proposal can be found within the "Overview of the Research Proposal" folder.
  • Specific information on the content of each section of the Research Proposal is located within the "Research Proposal Content and Formatting" folder. Within the "Research Proposal Content and Formatting" folder there are four folders with the information content and formatting required for the proposal. Several of the folders contain a "Guidelines" document that has detailed information about the content of the section (or sub-section) and review questions for each part. Please note that the review questions provided in the guidelines documents are meant to be used only as a model or checklist to assist you in developing the section. Do not repeat the questions within your proposal.
  • The "Examples of Research Papers" folder provides several research proposal examples for your review. These examples do not have the same formatting, sections, or subsections that are required for your proposal, but they do provide very good samples of the necessary information and writing style for the different sections of your proposal, so it is very important that you review these examples carefully and thoroughly. (Note: The structure/organization used in the example papers is not the same as that required for the proposal in this course. Do not use the structure/organization as a guide for writing your proposal.)
  • The "Research Proposal Evaluation Forms" folder contains copies of the evaluation forms that I use for my assessment of your work for the various components of the research proposal. You should use these forms as a guide for writing and reviewing each section before submitting the assignment.
