Question: Assignment is meant to be a critical analysis. The purpose is to examine the central arguments in the book and provide an assessment. You must justify why you agree or disagree with the major arguments and analysis put forward by the author.
While a brief summary of the key issues and arguments explored by the book is necessary, the bulk of the review must be your own evaluation of the merits of the book.
1) Situate your argument in terms of the book's contribution
What background context informs the book?
What particular aspect/problem/issue are you responding to in your review?
Why should we care about your argument?
2) State the main argument that you're going to make about the book.
Argument MUST be clear and specific (not too broad)
Must be narrow enough so that the argument is manageable - something you can reasonably expect to examine in a paper
AND so that the argument doesn't leave the reader asking "so what?"
Thesis
Too broad:
"Multiculturalism and feminism are compatible"
Still too broad:
"The democratic foundations underlying multiculturalism and feminism mean that we ought to stop setting the two in opposition"
Specific argument:
"A liberal state should, as far as feasible, decide whether to protect the rights of women in a minority culture on the basis primarily of what the women in the group want it to do" (Friedman 2005)
3) Offer an overview of HOW you're going to make this argument
Outline key things that you'll need to examine to successfully make this argument
State these in the order that you will examine them
Explain WHY you will look at them
How do these parts fit together in order to help you to make your argument?
An introduction should be a "roadmap" of the essay.
A reader should know:
1) Where she is starting from
2) Where she is going, and
3) How she is going to get there
Everything in the essay should help you to make your argument
Explain significance and relate to thesis
Making arguments vs. stating claims
Demonstrate don't assert
Analysis not description
Always define key terms
Explain relationship between concepts, if necessary
Citations and paraphrasing
Always give author credit
Distinguish between your observations and the authors'
Clearly identify your analysis
Point to specific pages where needed
Always explain and analyze use of the book
Don't rely on a quotation to do the work for you
