Assignment - The Blue Collar Brilliance Through Rhetorical Appeals Article Analysis
Description - To evaluate something means to judge or determine the significance, worth, or quality of that thing. For this essay, you will choose an article from a newspaper or magazine and evaluate (judge) whether the author used the rhetorical appeals we learned in class (ethos, pathos, and logos) strongly or weakly to argue his/her point.
Directions - Search for one article that makes a clear argument, analyze it carefully, and come up with an overall claim (your thesis) which will state how persuasive you thought the author's argument was based on his/her use of the rhetorical appeals. Your thesis must give a reason as to why or why not you thought the argument was strong. Your introduction should begin with a brief summary of the author's argument and should then funnel down into your thesis statement (your judgment of how well the argument was constructed through the rhetorical appeals).
You will not argue your own personal stance about the issues the author brings up in the article (whether you personally think they are right or wrong). For example, if the article is about climate change, you will not put in your own "two cents" about climate change or whether you agree or disagree with the author on this issue. You will only look at how well the author constructed and crafted the argument through their use of the rhetorical appeals. Your paper must be at least 1000 words, and it must include a Works Cited page and proper in-text citations for the one source you are evaluating.
Please Note - if your source does not have specific page numbers, then your in-text citations should include the paragraph number(s) that the quote came from. You also need to include a Works Cited page for the source. If you get your article from a printed copy of a magazine or newspaper, then you do need to include page numbers in proper MLA citations.
You may look through several newspapers or news magazines for articles:
(Keep in mind that each of these newspapers vary in their credibility).
The New York Times
Time Magazine
The Washington Post
The Los Angeles Times
Huffington Post
The BBC
Newsweek
The Nation
Forbes
The OC Register
and others.... (run them by me first)
It may help to look for the "Opinion" section in each online newspaper for articles that do not simply report an event but argue an opinion. You can also look through the blogs of newspaper contributors that are linked to that newspaper's website. Furthermore, if necessary, try opening these websites or any article you find in "a new incognito window" if you find yourself constantly blocked by paywalls when you try to access an article.
Make sure you do the following:
Choose an article in which the author clearly makes an argument.
Write an essay of at least 1000 words with a clear thesis, topic sentences, and organization.
Include examples from the article that clearly demonstrate each appeal. Be sure to explain not only how the example illustrates an instance of ethos, pathos, or logos, but also how that example ultimately strengthens or weakens the author's argument.
