Assignment -

Using the IVFE Groups Data, create a table and brief narrative description of the baseline characteristics of the three groups that you would use at the beginning of an article Results section. The point of the table is not only to give your reader a sense of the baseline characteristics of your three groups, but also to identify variables you will need to control for in the later analysis [note, you won't actually carry out the final analysis for this exercise]. In order to do this, you will need to indicate to the reader which variables the three groups are significantly different on.

The baseline characteristics you need to test for equivalence are:

Sex

Age

Type of Admission

Presence of ARDS (acute respiratory distress syndrome)

Apache II score (a measure of condition severity)

BMI

You may assume that continuous variables meet the necessary assumptions for a test of group differences.

Rules:

There are different ways of presenting baseline characteristics and group differences. Some authors use two tables (one for categorical variables and one for continuous variables) while other authors combine categorical and continuous variables into a single table. Also, there are different ways of indicating statistical significance of difference between groups (including p values in the table, using superscripts with table footnotes). Identify an article from a scientific journal in your field to use as an example (make sure that the example article presents baseline group differences and significance values).
