Case Study on an International Entrepreneur
The assignment is on an "International Entrepreneur" and NOT on the Enterprises or Ventures they own.
Students are to build/create the case studies using secondary sources. Harvard referencing to be applied.
Students are free to choose any International Entrepreneur. Choice of IE will not have any bearing on the mark. However, students are encouraged to look beyond the well-known IEs. Women IEs also have potential to be explored.
PART A: (1000 words)
- A brief introduction about an International Entrepreneur + Ventures. Should make use of IE definitions covered in class (Kirzner, Hisrich, Oviatt and Mcdougall etc.) to justify the choice of IE.
- IE's motivation to set up the ventures/businesses supported by theories such as: familial influences, education, prior experience, push and pull factors, other motivational theories and concepts, etc.
- Apply trait theoriesto chosen IE to answer whether Entrepreneurs are born or made?(Burns)
- Use effectuation theories by SARASVATHY, (what makes entrepreneurs Entrepreneurial? What influences their decision making?), applying whichever of the 5 Principles - Bird in hand, affordable loss, Crazy Quilt, Lemonade and Pilot in the sky - that your chosen IE may confirm to.
- What lessons can we draw from this International Entrepreneur? (Lessons learnt should have links to underlying theories and concepts related to entrepreneurs (this is not a summary of what has already been said about the chosen IE so far).
Part B: (500 words) - Themes
- Define the theme/s your chosen IE falls into using a few definitions and confirming how your chosen IE abides by the chosen theme/s.
- What are the features of the chosen theme/s selected above? Apply the features to your chosen IE.
- Try to capture the current debates on the chosen theme/s. Need to address the latest happenings.
- Conclude part A and part B comparing and confirming/dis confirming whether the literature is similar with these definitions of an IE and the related themes applied.
Indicative topics for themes include (only select the theme/s that apply to your chosen IE):
1. Gender and (international) entrepreneurship
2. Family and (International) entrepreneurship
3. Financing (International entrepreneurship)
4. Technology entrepreneurship
5. Social (International) entrepreneurship
6. Habitual/Serial (Entrepreneurship)
7. Ethnicity & (International) entrepreneurship
Word limit: 1500 (part A 1000 words,part B 500 words)+-10%
Course work -Literature Review
Each student will prepare and submit a written assignment based on a detailed investigation of a particular International) Entrepreneurship topic (See below). This assignment requires each student to undertake a critical literature review of their allocated topic -indicative (but not exhaustive) and identify and synthesize the key issues and themes emerging (maximum 2000 words).
Indicative areas include:
1. International Entrepreneurship & economic development
2. Government and small internationally active small business
3. International Entrepreneurial opportunities
4. Psychology of the (international) entrepreneur
5. Growth & development in the international SME
6. Explaining rapid internationalisation
