Homework: Communications
For this homework, locate and analyze a music video, using the method discussed in class and theories from the textbook. Feel free to use the music video that you chose for the music video discussion. You may also use some of the text from that discussion in your paper for your analysis. Write a 3-5 page paper with the application of communication theories to a favorite music video. Through a visual and textual analysis, you will explore the issue of gender through imagery and language by competing the three parts of this homework.
Objectives: In this homework, students will demonstrate ability to:
A. Apply theories discussed in class
B. Develop an interpretation of the text based on this analysis
C. Express their interpretation with a clear thesis
D. Argue for their interpretation using evidence from the text
Guidelines:
A. Pick a music video (text)
B. Analyze it according to the theories in the text/articles
C. Construct a thesis or "claim" about the text
D. Write a paper supporting your claim with evidence
Part I: Music Video
A. Brief history about the music video, artist, and music genre.
B. Write out the processions of scenes. What happens first, second, etc. What are the messages revealed by this music video?
C. How do you relate to this video? Does this video relate to your own culture, lifestyle, or dreams? Why did you choose this video? Did this video help you during a time of heartbreak, processing of emotions, or healing?
Part II: Reference (Use images and language/lyrics as evidence to your observations)
A. What kind of truthfulness/reality does this music video seem to claim (modality)?
B. What kind of storyworld does this text construct?
C. What significant elements of real life (if any) does it employ?
D. What value does it ascribe to these elements in relation to the study of communication? (That is, how does it frame them as compared to other ways they could be framed)?
Part III: Silence
A. What elements are not included here but could have been ("conspicuous by their absence")?
B. What elements might be relevant but could not be said because of censorship, audience expectation, or other constraints on the music video?
C. How does understanding the perception of nonverbal behaviors change the way we behave?
