Mobile and Satellite Communication Systems Assignment - Learning the basics of the LTE and 4G networks

  • Discern knowledge development and directions on the recent advances in 4G to the research principles and methods of 5G technologies.

Literature review on LTE advanced and 4G -

The 4G cellular networks are the current cellular mobile technology. The upcoming 5G cellular network technology is being developed based on the 4G network. Therefore, it is very crucial to extend your knowledge on 4G networks. In this assignment, you will review the 4G/LTE networks from five perspectives, which are:

1- A brief historical background of LTE, advancement towards 5G and the 5G requirements

2- LTE core network

a. Building blocks, interfaces and their functionality (mention but do not provide detail on the protocol stacks).

b. Similarities and differences between 4G and 2G/3G core networks

To get broader perspective, look at the LTE network diagrams shown in attached Figures 1.

MME (Mobility Management Entity)

SGW (Serving Gateway)

PGW (PDN Gateway)

3- LTE eNodeB functionality and its interconnections

4- The physical layer of the air interface including:

a. An introduction to OFDM/SC-FDMA.

b. Framing and resource blocks

c. Carrier aggregation

d. The system parameters including the allocated bands, modulations etc.

5- Logical channels and their mapping to physical channels.

The report must have the following sections -

Abstract

1. Introduction and a brief historical background of LTE and the requirements for 5G with a brief description of the report sections

2. LTE core network

3. LTE eNodeB

4. The physical layer of LTE Air interface

5. Logical channels

Conclusions

References

Section to be included in the report -

1. Section 1 literature review - Introduction and a brief historical background of LTE and the requirements for 5G with a brief description of the report sections.

2. Section 2 LTE core network - Clearly explain the core network of the LTE by using diagrams and relevant tables.

3. Section 3 LTE eNodeB - Detailed review of eNodeB of LTE system.

4. Section 4 The physical layer of LTE Air interface - Detailed review of the LTE air interface.

5. Section 5 Logical channels - Review of the LTE Logical channels and their mapping on physical channels.

6. Conclusion and discussion - Explanatory of strength and weakness of 4G and what requirements motivates for the development of 5G.

The assignment must be in MS Word format, single line spacing, 11-pt Calibri (Body) font and 2 cm margins on all four sides of your page with appropriate section headings. Reference sources must be cited in the text of the report, and listed appropriately at the end in a reference list using IEEE referencing style for School of Business and School of Information Technology and Engineering respectively.
