Market Track project.
The first step in this project is to identify sources of stock market quotations and become acquainted with stock tables. The business sections in local newspapers contain stock tables. Another source which most students of business read often is The Wall Street Journal. Begin by studying the basic organization of the tables and the column headings. Symbols which appear in the far left column along with other special features are explained in the footnotes which the student must read to fully understand the stock and bond tables. In your review, look for information on the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the Standard & Poor 500 Stock Index.
Next, select two stocks and begin tracking their daily activity. Include in the project the volume of trading activity each day (the actual number of shares traded) and data on the high, low and closing prices over a three-week period.
Also, collect two articles related to your stock investments from sources such as The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Business Week, etc., which have some bearing on your investments or their industry. The articles may mention the company explicitly, or only the industry of which it is a part.
Write a brief explanation of the relationship of the news in each article to the trading activity and price of your investments.
Finally, during the same three-week period you are tracking stock information, also track the daily movements of the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the Standard and Poor's 500 Stock Index. In your report, compare activity in your investments with these broader market indexes.
