Assessment: Essay (2000 words maximum)

Using theory to support your selection and explanation, identify and briefly explain five to ten different strategies that could be implemented to support the learning needs of students with special needs with respect to the identified topic, including strategies for literacy and numeracy.

Suggested Structure:

Introduction
• Brief definition and explanation of diversity and special needs as they apply to early childhood education. Highlight the strategies for supporting students with special needs in relation to an identified topic (200 words)

Body

• Explanation of the strategies for supporting students with special needs, including literacy and numeracy needs. Justify the teaching strategies in relation to the special needs (800 words)
• Identify theory that informs the strategies above. Demonstrate understanding of how theory informs practice for intervention specific to the special needs (800 words)
• Conclusion with insight. Summarise the main points of the essay provide a reflective statement (200 words).

Research and Referencing
A minimum of 6 references are required to pass this assignment. You are expected to refer to the required text and at least 5 other references from the readings and/or session materials unit. You can support your work with other peer-reviewed journal articles drawn from outside of the unit. Refer to ExO and CuO for recommended readings.

In-text referencing and reference list (at the end of your essay) should be formatted according to APA guidelines. Only references cited the text should be included in the reference list.
