Breastfeeding can come with several common conditions for the mother. Some of these conditions include sore nipples, hyper-lactation, engorgement, plugged milk ducts, letdown failure, and low milk supply. Sore nipples stem from different factors, such as blood blisters, sores, or plugged milk ducts. It is a common condition because the baby may not be positioned properly on the mother's breast. Letdown failure is a when the oxytocin reflex hormone is not working. This leads to the milk not properly coming out of the breast and can be a cause of lack of oxytocin. Oxytocin is a hormone that promotes positive feelings, when a mother can't relax, she is not able to produce this hormone. Hyper-lactation is another common condition. This condition increases the milk volume in the breast. Symptoms include plugged ducts, leaking, and pain with letdown. Engorgement is when the mother's breasts are overfilled with milk. This is a common condition that is the result of hyper-lactation. When a mother is experiencing this condition, she will have very firm breasts and they may be painful at the touch. Plugged ducts are when the milk is being blocked off by a duct that may be clogged.
