In this video about depression, what I saw related to depressive disorders was when the man was talking about his series of losses he endured such as losing his mom and dealing with a breakup from a relationship which caused a depressed mood. He then mentioned he was losing interest in everything and had no motive to want to do anything. He began doing less, thinking less, and feeling less which caused anxiety. He felt like it was too painful to be alive. He even thought he had witnessed a stroke. He mentioned that someone can be so depressed that they will say that people are going to die anyway no matter what we do. Depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. The symptoms/characteristics a diagnosing physician would look for if there was a concern any patient was suffering from depression would be a depressed mood or anhedonia, changes in appetite or weight, insomnia or hypersomnia, psychomotor agitation or retardation, fatigue or loss of energy, feelings of guilt or worthlessness, difficulty thinking, concentrating, or making decisions, suicidal ideation or suicide attempts. What surprised me is how so many people in the world are going through or went through depression and how common it is now to have these symptoms after dealing with great losses in life. After watching this video, it makes me wonder if depression could ever be cured if someone has been through many catastrophic and painful losses in their life.
