BOTY203 Plant Diversity - University of New England
Task - Write a short informative review of the systematics and conservation values of a group of plants in the style suitable for publication in a scientific journal. The review should be focused on the content and presentation and instructions set out in this document.
Purpose of task
The assignment is designed to develop your critical scientific thinking and writing skills to:
• Find and assess, review, and understand relevant information from a range of sources including primary and review journal articles, books and book chapters, and Internet sources.
• Be discerning in choice of sources and in selection of information.
• Communicate clearly in writing
• Develop your understanding and knowledge of plant taxonomy and botany through an appreciation of the range of information relevant to taxonomic studies; the significance of plant taxonomic studies to botany, science and society in general; and the development of ideas over time in plant taxonomy.
1. Choose a plant family (or a genus) as recognised in the Australian Plant Census (APC; this is subtly but importantly different from APNI).
a. Ensure that there are at least three genera in the family and at least one species native to Australia, when writing on a family (or large subfamily). Very small groups are not necessarily easier. Very large groups are often endowed with much relevant and irrelevant information.
b. Ensure that there are more than 10 species if dealing with a genus only, and that genus must have at least one member native to Australia.
c. Use APC, APNI or Australia's Virtual Herbarium (AVH) to determine that your choice meets requirements of a or b above.
d. Check that no one else has already chosen the group you want to do. Then post your choice and your name to the list "Assignment 1: Report: Who is writing on what!" on Moodle.
