Task

Group Size: The presentation will be conducted in groups of 4 unless otherwise negotiated.

Background to Task

In December 2013 Holden announced that they would cease manufacturing in Australia by the end of 2017. The closure of plants at Port Melbourne and Adelaide will result in the loss of 2,900 jobs.

During this period Holden will continue to produce motor vehicles in Australia. To do this Holden will need to maintain an efficient workforce and will face a range of issues retaining highly skilled workers as employees prepare themselves and seek new employment opportunities.

Tasks to be completed

1. As Director of Human Resources Holden Australia, and the Human Resource Manager have been asked to prepare a submission to be presented to the CEO and Human Resource Director at General Motors Head Office in Detroit USA. This presentation needs to outline the key issues confronting HR Australia personnel in retaining it workforce before closure in 2017, as well as maintaining an efficient workforce capable of meeting productivity targets whilst developing HRM strategies for the ultimate reduction and lay-off of employees.

2. Students assigned the role of HR Director and HR Manager from Holden Australia will be required to develop a maximum of eight slides that will be presented during the boardroom presentation and submitted for assessment. 

3. The CEO and Human Resource Director at General Motors Head Office in Detroit USA are required to ask questions of the HR representatives from Holden Australia during the 15 minutes presentation as to how the downsizing process will be managed over the next four years

4. Students assigned the role of CEO and Human Resource Director at General Motors Head Office in Detroit USA are required to present a verbal feedback and a one to two page written report justifying their reasons as to why the Australian HRM proposals have been accepted, rejected or modified.

Please Note:

1. Group members are required to work collectively to develop the boardroom presentation of 8 slides.

2. Group members are also required to work collectively to develop the CEO and Human Resource Director verbal feedback as to why the Australian HRM proposals have been accepted, rejected or modified.

3. Group members are also required to work collectively to write a one to two page report as to why the Australian HRM proposals have been accepted, rejected or modified. (It is more than likely that pints 2 and 3 will be the same).

4. It is expected that the boardroom presentation will have been workshopped a minimum of three times before being conducted in front of their classroom peers.

5. All four group members will receive the SAME mark for their Boardroom Assessment Task.

How To Conduct A Boardroom Meeting

1. Chairman calls on the president to open the meeting.

2. Chairman welcomes guests and asks for apologises.

3. Chairman asks for the secretary to read the minutes.

4. Secretary reads the minutes and moves that the minutes be accepted as correct.

5. Chairman asks for a seconder of the motion.

6. Chairman takes a vote on the motion.The motion is either passed (carried) or not.

7. Chairman asks if there is any matters arising from the minutes.

8. The chairman asks has there been any correspondence sent in.

9. If there has been correspondence then the secretary or a member from the meeting will move as motion that the correspondence be accepted.

10. The chairman will ask for a seconder.

11. All those in favour raise your hand.All those against raise your hand.

12. Chairman asks for the treasurer report.

13. Treasurer moves that the Treasures Report be accepted as true and correct.

14. Chairman asks for a seconder.

15. All those in favour, raise your hand. All those against, raise your hand.

16. Motion if carried (or not).

17. Chairman asks for Reports / Announcements / Presentations

  • Presentation from the Director of Human Resources Holden Australia, and the Human Resource Manager with questions from the CEO and HR Director of General Motor in Detroit USA on how the downsizing process will be managed by HR representatives from Holden Australia whilst maintaining an efficient workforce capable of meeting productivity targets whilst developing HRM strategies for the ultimate reduction and lay-off of employees by the end of 2017.
