BNV7126 Advanced Quantification - Birmingham City University
Learning Outcome 1: Describe and quantify selected complex elements of building and civil engineering works in accordance with Standard Methods of Measurement
Learning Outcome 2: Critically analyse and evaluate construction design data represented in 2D, 3D and 4D drawings and specification information to compile measurements for use in the procurement and construction stages using computer aided measurement software system
Learning Outcome 3: Construct descriptions of work appropriate to selected work sections being measured and costed and represented as a priced cost management document
Learning Outcome 4: Compare the relationship between development of the design and the measurement approach and be able to advise and guide other members of the design team appropriately on the complexities of accurate measurement of more advanced sections of construction projects
Part 1
Make the necessary assumptions*, measure the quantities of the works according to the following sections of NRM2.
Excavating and filling
In-situ Concrete Works including in-situ concrete, formwork and reinforcement
Masonry Waterproofing
Exclude any 1) structural and architectural works above the damp proof course (DPC) of the external walls, 2) retaining walls, 3) decoration works and 4) external works.
You shall also include a copy of the marked up drawings and all dimension papers or measurement schedules in your submission.
* - they include the conditions that need to be defined such as the treatment of surface water and disposal of excavated materials etc.
Part 2
Based on the quantities measured for the previous task, prepare bills of quantities for the sub-structure works. To help you complete the task, the colleague that works together with you in the project has identified the following relevant parts of specifications for your bill items to refer to:
• 10-35-35/621
• 15-05-15/130
• 20-05-95/110
• 25-10-55/150
• 25-10-55/160
• 30-70-90
• 45-25-20/337
• 45-25-95/315
• 45-45-70/380
• 45-55-28/360
• 45-55-50/302
• 45-80-50/300
• 45-80-50/316
• 45-80-50/384
Part 3
The design for the superstructure of the New Pavillion building is under development. It will take 6 months to complete. Similar to the sub-structure works, the plan is to use the JCT Standard Building Contract with Quantities for the work.
Other than the New Pavillion building, the client plans to build a number of other small buildings such as changing rooms, toilets and café, etc. in the park. Due to the budget plan set for the year 20/21, the client wants to speed up the design and construction process of those buildings and spend the money within the financial year. Design and build as an alternative procurement route is considered. You are asked to advise the client on 1) the implications of inaccurate quantities under the JCT Standard Building Contract with Quantities, 2) how construction cost is controlled if design and build method is adopted to procure other small buildings in the park and 3) how building quantities can be used for cost control purpose in a design and build contract.
Part 4
The client has now adopted a design and build approach for the procurement of the small buildings in the park. A design and build contractor has been appointed to carry out the work. As far as the contractor is aware, the project has a conceptual BIM model developed by the design team. The contractor is planning to remodel the building using BIM and develop the model further through integrating information from its supplier. Your team, a unit of the contractor, is assigned to investigate the following:
1. Explain the relevant level of detail (lod) and level of information (loi) for the building model are required at the various stages of construction;
2. Critically evaluate the benefits and challenges in producing high lod and loi models so as to enable automation in cost estimating using advanced functions in 5D modelling softwares;
Prepare a letter to the client to address the above.
