BN103 Platform Technologies Assignment - Melbourne Institute of Technology, Australia
Assessment Title - Computer Organisation & Architecture, Arithmetic & Logic Operations, Embedded Systems and Applications
Purpose of the assessment (with ULO Mapping) - This assignment assesses the following Unit Learning Outcomes; students should be able to demonstrate their achievements in them.
a. Describe basic computer structure and operation;
b. List factors that may affect computer performance, diagnose basic computer problems and perform some hardware troubleshooting;
c. Report on different integer number systems and convert between them;
d. Explain floating point representations using the IEEE754 standard;
e. Describe basic electrical primitives;
f. Describe drivers of future change in computing.
Assignment Description - This an individual assignment. The assignment consists of four parts. The detailed description of each part is given in following sections.
A. Computer Organisation and Architecture
1. Discuss the main features of the von Neumann architecture. How does it differ from Harvard architectures?
2. Why are interrupts used in a computer? Highlight the drawbacks of disabling interrupts? Give an appropriate example.
3. Briefly define seven RAID levels. How is redundancy achieved in a RAID system?
B. Arithmetic & Logic Operations, and Electrical Primitives
1. With a detailed step-by-step process, convert the following decimal numbers into binary, Hexadecimal and IEEE 754 format.
i. -42.nn (where nn represents last two digits of your MIT ID)
ii. 1/(m.5) (where m represents last digit of your MIT ID)
2. Construct the digital circuit with Logisim (or another online simulator) for following expression. The circuit has one output Q and three inputs A, B, and C. Also write the truth table.
Q = ((A⊕B)+C-)((A·B)+C)(A-+B+C-)
3. Explain Ohm's law with the help of a graph. Two 15V Batteries are connected in series, which produce a total voltage of 30V. This battery is connected to two resistors which are in parallel. Values of the resistors are 9 and 18 ohms. Draw the circuit diagram for this scenario. Find the current flowing through the circuit.
C. Embedded Systems and Applications
Use library and online resources to carry out detailed research about embedded systems and their applications. Based on your research
1. Explain embedded system and its organization with the help of a suitable diagram.
2. Discuss the importance of embedded systems in industry. Discuss one application enabled with embedded systems.
D. Reflective Journal
Write a reflective journal descripting your experience with Platform Technologies (BN103) in T2 2020 covering the period of eleven weeks (from week 1 to week 11). You must reflect upon your learning experience so far.
E. References
Must consider at least 06 current references from journal/conference papers and books. Must follow IEEE style.
