Anna is a 50-year-old female with a history of hypertension for the past 10 years. Her doctor prescribed blood pressure medication as well as a Low Sodium diet. Anna has not consistently adhered to her medication or Low Sodium diet. She is 5'4" tall and weighs 150 pounds. Anna gained 5 pounds over the weekend despite a poor appetite. She became short of breath and noticed her feet were too swollen for her shoes to fit. She went to see her doctor and was diagnosed with Stage 5 Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). She has oliguria and anemia. The doctor admitted Anna to the hospital for immediate hemodialysis due to fluid overload and a blood potassium level of 6.7. Additional lab values include: BUN 110 Creatinine 4.2 Albumin 2.1 Ferritin 30 Calcium 8.2 Phosphorus 7.0 Hematocrit 28.5 GFR 18 What is the probable cause of Anna's kidney failure? Is there anything she could have done to prevent it?
