Subject Code - BIS103
Subject Name - Network Fundamentals
Course - Bachelor of Information Systems
Faculty - Business, Design and Information Technology
Holmesglen Institute, Australia
Instructions - Evidence: An academic report (1500 -2000 words) and Packet Tracer file, submitted on the Faculty's Learning Management System, Brightspace.
Learning Outcomes -
1. Understand Network fundamentals the different network types and the various devices that are used in these networks.
2. Describe the basic operation of the protocols in the OSI and TCP/IP models and analyse network traffic.
3. Establish an understanding of data flow, and the different protocols in the TCP/IP layers, by using Packet Analysing/Capturing software
4. Describe key elements of the Internet, including but not limited to, Routers, IP addresses, Port Numbers & DNS Servers.
5. Apply the knowledge learnt to create a logical design for a small to medium network.
Assignment Scenario -
You as a network engineer has been contacted by XYZ Business to set up their network. Network requirements are as follow:
It has;
- Clients LAN which need 100 PCs
- Admin LAN which need 50 PCs
- HR department LAN which need 20 PCs
- Management LAN which need 10 PCs
- Server Room need 2 Servers (DNS and WEB servers)
- WAN links between routers
The network needs 3 routers, first router will serve Clients Network, second router will serve Admin and Management Networks, and third router will serve HR and Server network. All routers will interconnect with WAN serial connections, and all 5 networks will be connected by using LAN connections.
XYZ Business has been granted Network ID of 200.100.100.0/24, you need to allocate separate Subnets for all LANs and WAN connections.
Task 1 - Setting up a Network
You are required to set up a network consisting of PCs, routers and servers. You need to configure routing between routers.
Perform the following activities and support your workings with screenshots:
1. Calculate appropriate subnets for all LANs and WANs. Show all calculations.
2. Configure the PCs (only up-to 3 PCs need to be shown in topology), Server and Router interfaces with appropriate IP addresses. Draw a building floor diagram (or find one from web), show the placement of routers, switches, servers and PCs from different departments.
3. Configure EIGRP routing on the routers. Check routing and conductivity by using ping from one of Client PC to the local router gateway interface, then the WEB server. Write a brief report on other routing protocols which you may consider for this network.
4. Use the traceroute command from the client PC to DNS server. Include results of the traceroute in your submission. Explain the traceroute process including packet and frame encapsulation/de-capsulation at different OSI or TCP/IP model layers.
Task 2 - Configuring Network Services
Using the same network topology that you have setup in Task 1, perform the following additional activities:
1. WEB Server: Configure a WEB server, with URL.
2. DNS: Configure a DNS Server on the server device; test DNS Server by browsing from client PC, DNS must resolve this URL to IP address of WEB Server.
3. Firewall Security: Secure network by configure traffic filtering on the router to block web (http) traffic ONLY between first PC of Admin network and WEB Server (first PC should not browse WEB page but should ping to WEB server) and provide evidence of such traffic filtering.
