Information Systems Use in Organisations -
Select one of the business case studies provided separately and investigate how businesses like these currently use information systems to improve their business efficiency, decision-making, and provide a competitive advantage over other businesses and how they might use them in the future.
The Assignment consists of 2 parts:
1. A research report of 2000 words
2. A presentation of your findings
Assessment Task - Research Report & Presentation
You will research a range of different Information System types including but not limited to
- Enterprise Resource Planning Systems.
- Customer Relationship Management Systems.
- Social Media Information Systems.
- Business Intelligence Systems.
- Various types of eBusiness systems including web and mobile applications.
You will investigate the degree of usefulness of these system types to the business you have selected and will develop models of the business and business processes as well as providing specific details of how these systems could be used to improve the business.
At the conclusion of the research and development of the report, your group will present your findings to the class.
The case studies are contained in a separate documents named
- Phoenix Travel
- SmartCarShare
- Wyatt Hotels
and are available on the learning management system.
Part 1: Research Report
The research report must have the format:
- Cover sheet (make sure each team member's name and student no are on the coversheet)
- Table of contents
- Brief Introduction
- Modelling
- Information Systems and Competitive Advantage
- Business Intelligence & Big Data
- Information System Development
- eBusiness
- Enterprise Computing
- Appendix - Team task allocation
Students need to demonstrate to the tutor that each team member has made a significant contribution to the report and presentation. It is suggested the group use a collaborative environment such as google drive to store documents and work on the assignment. You will also create a document that lists each task and the name of the team member/s responsible for the task. The task allocation must be approved by the tutor before commencing other work on the report. The group is also required to discuss their progress with the tutor on a weekly basis.
The various aspects of the report are described below. When you construct the report you should answer the questions that are posed but do not include the question itself in the report.
Item Description -
1. Business Modelling
a) Analyse the Business Model Canvas approach to modelling a Business and explain its approach and components.
b) Research, analyse and document a different technique or model for modelling a Business environment or work system.
c) Develop a Business Model Canvas for the case study you selected.
2. Business Process Modelling
a) Analyse the BPMN approach to modelling a business process and explain its approach, components and notation.
b) How does this approach compare to documenting a Business Process using Use Case Specifications?
c) List the 5 most important Business Processes for the case study you selected, rank them in order from 1 to 5 and provide a brief description of each process.
d) Create a BPMN model for business process 1 from your list.
e) Create a Use Case Specification for business process 2 from your list.
You can use MS Visio (available in the PC Rooms) or a software tool of your choice to draw the BPMN model. The Use Case Specification must follow the format of the examples provided in tutorials.
3. Information Systems and Competitive Advantage
a) How can Information Systems provide a competitive advantage to organisations?
b) Explain two examples of disruptive innovation using information systems.
c) What changes could the business in your selected case study employ to gain competitive advantage over other businesses in the sector?
4. Business Intelligence & Big Data
a) What is Business Intelligence and how is it used by organisations?
b) Explain the architecture and components of Business Intelligence systems.
c) Analyse and explain the primary activities in the BI process.
d) How could the business in your selected case study use BI & Big Data to improve decision making in the business? Provide at least 2 specific example for this business.
5. Information System Development
a) Explain the phases of the Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC).
b) What are the differences between the SDLC approach to System Development and Agile development approaches?
6. eBusiness
a) What is eBusiness and what are the crucial aspects to making it work?
b) Explain three eBusiness models are used in businesses generally.
c) What eBusiness models are suited to the business in your selected case study?
d) Provide at least 2 specific examples for of eBusiness applications that would improve their decisions making, increase their sales, or provide superior customer service.
7. Enterprise Computing
a) What is a Transaction Processing System and how are they used?
b) Explain the components of an ERP system and their impact on business processes.
c) How do ERP systems incorporate transaction processing?
d) Which enterprise computing applications have the most potential to improve the business you are investigating and how would they achieve this goal. Provide at least 3 specific examples for this business.
For example. Identify and discuss ways to increase sales from existing customers.
8. Presentation
This is a presentation of your findings from your research.
In the presentation you are required to focus on two different types of Information System that you found to be the most benefit to the client in your selected case study.
The information system types may include but are not limited to:
- Business Intelligence
- Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)
- Customer Relationship Management (CRM)
- Social Media
- eBusiness systems
Which may be deployed on mobile devices, in the cloud or on traditional platforms.
For each of the two selected system types:
a) Explain what these systems are and the way they work.
b) Using specific examples and recommendations, describe how they would be used in the context of the business from your selected case study to improve their business efficiency, decision-making, and provide a competitive advantage over other businesses.
