Big Idea Curriculum Development Process
The curriculum development process begins with observing children to determine their interests, existing knowledge and the possibilities for play based learning.
Include a minimum of four observations with reflections that lead to the determination of the "Big Idea" for curriculum development. These observations should justify the choice of the "Big Idea".
Link Theory to Practice:
What is the interest?
How does this observation demonstrate it is a pervasive interest?
Is it concrete? Is it specific? Explain why.
Identification: (State what your big idea is)
Rationale: (Use your thoughts from the linking theory to practice of the above four observations to sum up a conclusive rationale for your big idea. Describe why you have chosen this big idea for these children, at this time. Minimum 250 words.)
The "Big Idea" web will document your big idea. This documentation is to be completed on a poster board or flip chart paper and it will include concepts related to (minimum of 6 initial concepts and 12 sub-concepts) the big idea and options for play activities and play areas. Include a minimum of 20 activity ideas, with at least six different curriculum areas identified. Differentiate between concepts and experience ideas by shape or colour. Include a legend on your web so that the reader knows what each shape/colour means. Ensure your web is written in dark ink on a light background so that your instructor can easily read it on-line.
Typically, the children would contribute to this plan, as the big idea would evolve by their existing knowledge and their desire to learn more; the web would change and evolve over the time of the planning and there would be four or more photos of the evolution of the big idea web. The legend would indicate the dates changes were made and the web would be kept with the display during the time the curriculum is being implemented so that the student-educator and the children could contribute to the documentation of the big idea.
For the Fall 2020 term, you are not being asked to implement the Big Idea. Yet, the web will evolve as you think about the experiences you want to provide for the children. Add your new ideas to the web after planning your play area (photo 2) and each activity (photo 3, 4 and 5) and insert a photo into this document.
ACTIVITY #1
Description of activity (Enough description that any reader can know what you intend the children to do):
Identify the curriculum area of this activity. (Must be different than the play area and other activities, but must be one of the 4 curriculum areas listed - Water OR Granular, Blocks, Manipulative, Woodworking)
Rationale: (Relate back to observation. Minimum 250 words):
Physical location within the children's program:
Intended age range of children:
Identify the NEW vocabulary specific to this play area which you, the educator, will introduce and use with the children. (3-5 words).
Materials needed:
Include photos (either ones you have taken or ones from the internet to illustrate any materials that are not self-explanatory)
Environment:
Explain how you would prepare the environment for learning. Be specific in describing your educator intention in preparing this space (why these materials, why set up in this manner). This needs to be a thorough and detailed explanation that investigates the how and why of setting up.
Include a detailed diagram or photos to illustrate what the space would look like if you were setting it up. You may hand draw the diagram, use a computer program, or actually set up the space and take photos.
