Personality Dimensions: Big 5 PLUS Self-monitoring & Risk-taking

  • Take the Big 5 personality test; if you speak a second language fluently, it's pretty cool to compare your results to that as well (you'll have to find it). If you run into issues with the link above, try  https://www.truity.com/test/big-five-personality-test. The 2 add'l traits listed below are not in the text, however, I want you to include them in this discussion
  • Plus #1: Self monitoring of behaviour: observing & controlling how we are perceived by others.
  • High self-monitors are pragmatic and even chameleon-like actors in social situations. They say what others want to hear. These behaviours tends to depend upon the situation they are in; SM's tend to keep their public and private lives very separate (this is good for jobs that require influencing others).
  • Low self-monitors: tend to avoid situations that require them to adopt different outer images; they stick to their inner self and are commonly referred to as inflexible (they say it as they see it); act the same in all situations; their internal values tend to lead this behaviour
  • Plus #2: Risk-taking & Thrill-seeking: sensation seekers who pursue novel, intense, or complex sensations. These individuals are willing to take risks for the sake of these experiences; tends to be a constant need for giant payoffs/daily thrills. International minded travellers, sports enthusiasts (ex. snow boarders, mountain climbers/hikers...), seeking personal relationships (friendship or more) outside of your race or ethnicity are common examples of these types of people. Would taking an online course make you a risk-taker or thrill seeker??
  • Discuss how the 'Big Five' + 2 personality dimensions might be useful for an HR department or a manager. Consider the cons with using this information, as well.
