Topic - identification of mutated geans in breast cancer.
Assignment - Research project report
Learning outcome 1: Demonstrate originality in the application of knowledge, together with a practical understanding of how established techniques of research and enquiry are used to create and interpret knowledge in biotechnology.
Learning outcome 2: Use initiative and take responsibility; solve problems in creative and innovative ways;,communicate effectively, with colleagues and a wider audience, in a variety of media.
Learning outcome 3: Your dissertation is particularly pertinent to demonstration of CLO 1 and is also pertinent to CLO 2.
• Prepare a formal report of your individual research, according to the assignment brief, which includes an accurate record and critical evaluation of the findings of the research carried out.
Follow this brief, noting the criteria below and these instructions:
The research project report aims to provide you opportunity to plan, execute, collate and analyse scientific data using appropriate techniques and present an independent piece of hypothesis-driven literature research work relevant to the Biotechnology field. Text should be in a font no smaller than Times New Roman 12 or Arial 11, and at least 1.5 line-spacing. All text within the report must be in a format searchable through Turnitin (i.e. not saved as an image).
Typically, scientific reports are written in the third person, past tense. Your report will typically be written in the style of a journal article, with Abstract, Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion and Future work sections. This will be referenced throughout in text with a full reference list at the end. Tables and Figures should be professionally presented e.g. with titles and legends, separate from the main text. You should obtain further guidance from your supervisor on report structure, as this may vary depending on the type of research conducted.
The whole report should not exceed 10,000 words in total, excluding references and appendices only, and within this the abstract should not exceed 250 words.
Students should seek guidance from their supervisor on what detail is required for all aspects of their assessments. It is important to have regular discussion with your project supervisor. The role of the supervisor is to provide support for you in the way you conduct your project work. Your supervisor will also provide formative feedback on draft/s of your work - this will be arranged between you and your supervisor. General writing support is available centrally through PAD. Support for literature searching and use of LRC resources is supported on an individual basis by the departmental librarian, as well as in the unit lectures and workshops before the project starts.
This assessment will cover the work you perform during doing the project. Support will be provided on a weekly basis from your theme lead and theme tutors, and there will be tutorial material on BREO to guide you through the Unit and assessments. In terms of what you are doing during your project work you will:
• Demonstrate an applied understanding of how established techniques of research and enquiry are used to create and interpret knowledge in the field of Biotechnology.
• Conduct independent research and accurately record, evaluate and reflect on data gathered in order to draw conclusions in the context of existing knowledge/hypotheses in Biotechnology; use initiative and take responsibility; solve problems in creative and innovative ways; communicate effectively, with colleagues and a wider audience, in a variety of media.
Support:
A significant part of the dissertation process is to have regular discussion with your theme tutors. The role of the theme tutor is to provide support for you in your dissertation research and writing. Their role is not to think for you, to generate novel ideas for you or to provide critical appraisal of data for you. Through your meetings they will provide feedback on how to improve your understanding of the evidence you are assessing and its relevance to answering your research question.
General writing support is available centrally through PAD. Support for literature searching and use of LRC resources is supported on an individual basis by the departmental librarian, as well as in the unit lectures and workshops before the project starts. A report writing session will be delivered as part of the PGT project lecture series.
