Beth is a securities attorney and has served as outside counsel with Carol's investment firm for many years. The US Attorney recently indicted Carol, alleging she and her firm defrauded investors in a Ponzi-type scheme. Carol tells Beth she has indeed diverted her client's investments to her own personal use. Most of the investors are elderly and the investment fund's collapse will likely wipe out the entire retirement savings of these investors. Carol wants Beth to defend her against these charges. Dr. Meshum is an obstetrician/gynecologist. Rachel, a patient of Dr. Meshum's recently found out she is pregnant. Rachel requested Dr. Meshum perform an abortion. Dr. Meshum personally believes abortion to be morally wrong. (For the purposes of this assignment, assume the procedure contemplated is legal). Are the professional obligations of Beth and Dr. Meshum similar in regard to their fiduciary duties to their client/patient? Are there moral differences between these scenarios? For example, is it morally equivalent for the professionals to not perform the service their client is requesting?
