Bennie had been clinically depressed but is, however, now beginning to improve as he is being treated by a psychiatrist. His depression had not affected his service to the employer or the quality of his work in any way - in fact, his productivity was steadily improving with experience. He was an at-will employee of the Wagner Company, a Michigan private employer with 250 employees. Approximately a month ago the boss walked into the very crowded lunchroom during the company-wide lunch break and in a loud voice said to Bennie that he had just won the award for being just about the stupidest employee in the state of Michigan. She turned to the startled crowd and stated that Bennie's people skills were even worse that his stupidity. She then pointed to the door, and ordered Bennie to "Get out of here before I have security drag you out." Bennie asked what it was that he had done wrong. The boss said that she wasn't going to waste her time even trying to explain it to such an impotent idiot, and she snapped her fingers and pointed to the door. Bennie, surprised, embarrassed and humiliated, left. The employer has never.
