A 26-year-old female presents for a psychiatric follow up appointment. She was diagnosed with Bipolar 1 about one year ago. She was hospitalized once more after this for a manic episode. She has been stable on Divalproex ER 1500 mg at bedtime since then. She expresses today that her and her husband have been thinking about pregnancy. Current weight: 60 kg. Vital signs WNL. CBC and BMP were also checked today and all WNL. Other medications include multivitamin daily, loratadine 10 mg by mouth daily as needed for allergies, and a skin/hair/nails vitamin daily.

List here how you would discuss the risks and benefits of treated and untreated Bipolar Disorder during pregnancy.

The patient is in agreement to continue medications during pregnancy for her Bipolar Disorder. Discuss any changes to treatment you would initiate and why.
