In preparation for this discussion, as well as the case study "Benefits for Part-Time Workers" at the end of Chapter 15. Then answer the following questions:
- What are some factors that Alan should consider when determining whether to offer benefits to part-time workers?
- Do you think the firm should offer benefits to part-time workers? If yes, should it offer paid time off, the 401(k) plan, and health insurance, or only one or two of the benefits? Explain your recommendation
In your response posts, either agree with selections by building upon their points or challenge their selections and provide reasoning for the disagreement.Demonstrate more depth and thought than saying things like "I agree" or "You are wrong."
One factor that Alan should be mindful of is that of the financial budget of JSH. This is imperative because although they are one of the quickly developing CPA companies, they are still counted as a modest business where every cent counts. For example, if a couple of departments had an unusual amount of over budgeting, there would be questions and complicated situations of what would be deemed unnecessary. The financial budgeting of companies should not be overlooked in terms of what their employer has to offer. "Compensation professionals also face the challenge of planning budgets." (Martocchio, 2016, pg. 346).
Another factor that Alan should be mindful of is that of what their competitors are offering in the labor market. For example, in order to keep up with their competitors, Alan would really have to research on what makes their competition the best place to work for in terms of benefits. "HR management professionals are going to have increased opportunities to develop compensation and benefits programs for U.S. employees..." (Martocchio, 2016, pg. 325). Although it might be expensive, it is imperative for Alan to make sure that what JSH offers part time workers correlates to the rules and regulations of the geographic area.
I believe that the firm should be offering benefits to part time workers. Not only would it provide JSH a way to compete with their rivals, but it would also strengthen employee loyalty to the company. Employee retention is imperative for businesses such as JSH, who are a smaller business but steadily growing. Offering benefits, PTO, retirement plans, and health insurance would immediately attract strong talent that is necessary for growing in a positive direction. "An employer-sponsored benefits program is most effective when the workforce is relatively similar in terms of needs and preferences." (Martocchio, 2016, pg. 353).
