1. Being Scientific

In chapter 1 of the textbook, there is a discussion regarding the research steps involved in the scientific method. While the scientific method is a primary tool for research in all scientific areas, it can definitely serve a purpose in our own daily lives!

In your discussion response for this week, please provide an example of how you use the scientific method within your daily life. Include in your discussion how the steps of the scientific method apply to the example.

2. Cloning

Chapter six begins by looking at examples of the process of cloning. This is possible because all DNA has the necessary information to build the individual all over again.

In answering the questions below, demonstrate your understanding of the role of DNA in the cloning process:

• What kinds of guidelines should we create for scientists and consumers of cloning technology?

• What are the ethical goals that we should strive for, and what are the pitfalls and complications that we wish to avoid?

3. Research in the News

Mutations in the processes of the cell can be bad. One such mutation is cancer. Using the News feature on your favorite search engine, find an example of a new cancer treatment that has been published in the last month. Summarize the article and share the link with the class.

4. Genetic Testing and Insurance

We looked at genetic mutations. We looked at genetic mutations. This week we are looking at genetically inherited diseases (Chapter 9) and biotechnology, which is created through understanding the human genome (Chapter 10). Genetic testing could greatly help in the prevention and treatment of such diseases. Let's discuss genetic testing and how it is being used. Should genetic testing be encouraged or even mandated? What are the major drawbacks of genetic testing? How can these issues be addressed?

5. Adaptation

Successful adaptation for survival in an organism's environment is Darwin's concept of natural selection. Choose a specific example of a unique trait or behavior that a plant or animal has. Explain how this trait or behavior makes the organism to be well adapted to its environment.

6. Plants and Fungi

Both plants and fungi have essential roles within their ecosystems, affecting all organisms including humans. In your discussion, choose a specific flowering plant or fungus that has an economic impact. Explain that economic impact, whether it be positive or negative, as well as any ecosystem benefits that your organism has

7. Evolutionary Success

How do you define evolutionary success? Share your definition, as well as a specific example of a successful order, group or species. What role has natural selection played in the traits you see in these organisms? Give examples.

8. Biodiversity

Biodiversity refers to the variety of living organisms found within an ecosystem. Choose an example of human action that has led to the current biodiversity loss situation and increased species extinction rate. In addition, discuss potential solutions to these issues.
