BEHL 3027 Psychology Placement Portfolio
Your Portfolio will involve three elements (or pieces of work):
1. Sample of journal entries;
2. Reflection on your placement learning, as relates to your journal entries; and
3. Mock job application (comprised of cover letter and response to two selection criteria).
Each of these elements are described below.
Journal entries
Part of your task on placement was to keep a learning journal. Your journal is a record of the events and experiences of your placement (observations), and some of your initial thoughts and reactions (analysis). Choose two journal entries for your Portfolio that best illustrate the foundations of your placement learning.
Reflection
The reflection should move beyond individual events and experiences (discussed in your journal) to present a more holistic picture about your learning and the lessons and ideas you will take forward with you.
Putting together a coherent set of reflections will require you to look back over your journal and take the time to think about your placement as a whole. This piece of writing will help you to understand and appreciate your own development over the course of the placement.
Write your reflection in a format that provides advice to future students in the course. Tell future students the most important things about the placement experience, by:
• Identifying the challenges and achievements from your placement, along with the relevant psychological and transferable knowledge and skills used;
• Highlighting what you learnt from the placement experience and what you wish you had known before starting the course;
• Demonstrating critical reflection, in which you ‘test out' the intellectual products of your reflection (such as your insights and conclusions) against the literature and other external sources of information, and integrate the new understandings you have reached with diverse forms of evidence.
Job application
The final element of your portfolio is a (mock) job application that draws on your experiences on placement. Your job application will include a cover letter and response to two selection criteria, applying for an example job (available from learnonline). The job application will help you to express your learning and experiences in a format appropriate for potential employers.
Choose ONE of the example jobs for which to prepare your mock application. Your cover letter should be one page, with the selection criteria addressed starting on a separate page. For your chosen position, choose TWO of the criteria from those HIGHLIGHTED on the position description. Please utilise the STAR model (Situation, Task, Action, Response - you will learn about this in the third tutorial) to frame your responses to the criteria.
Remember that the letter and selection criteria responses must be true for you, now, just as if you were to apply for an actual advertised position. Try to utilise your placement experiences in the mock job application
Preparation
Participate in the teaching and learning activities: The nature and content of your journal is covered in the two-day intensive workshop, as are levels of reflection. This information is essential for understanding what to aim for with critical reflection. The third tutorial is directly related to the job application element of the Portfolio. And the final tutorial will revisit the idea of reflection, guide you through some examples of what the reflection piece should look like, help you to select which journal entries to present, and allow you to clarify any issues regarding the Portfolio.
Start early: the time spent thinking about your placement and the quality of this thinking time are really important factors in writing a good reflective piece, so be sure to start early.
Make a time to see the Course Coordinator: If you still have questions that can't be answered in the tutorial, you are welcome to make an appointment with the Course Coordinator to discuss your individual placement experiences and how they could be integrated into your Portfolio.
Word limit
The word limit for this assignment, as shown in the course outline, is 3000 words. Given the Pass / Fail grading scheme, it does not make sense to apply a percentage-based word limit penalty. Instead, assignments more than 10% over the word limit (i.e., more than 3300 words) will not be marked.
Assignments that don't reach the word limit will be marked on their merits.
If you need to, you can trim the journal entries slightly for inclusion in the Portfolio.
