Behavioral health equity is the right to access high-quality and affordable health care services and support for all populations. By improving access to behavioral health care, promoting quality behavioral health programs and practice, and reducing persistent disparities in mental health and substance use services for underserved populations and communities, recipients can ensure that everyone has a fair and just opportunity to be as healthy as possible (SAMHSA, 2024). Resources that I found interesting on the SAMHSA website throughout this course are included below. Within the state of South Carolina, information was based on local resources for residents like The Substance Use Agency and Mental Health Agency. The federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration has designated DAODAS as the Single State Agency responsible for overseeing the state's Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Block Grant and funding for substance use disorder programs in South Carolina. The Department of Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Services (DAODAS) estimates that approximately 451,000 individuals in South Carolina are suffering from substance-related problems that require immediate intervention and treatment. To address this need, the Department contracts with the state's county alcohol and drug abuse authorities to provide the majority of direct prevention, treatment and recovery.
