Explain nursing is an ever evolving field and it has been since its conception. In one article the authors stated "Beginning with Florence Nightingale in the 1800s and evolving again within the medical community, evidence-based practice continues to advance along with the nursing discipline" (Mackey & Bassendowski, 2017). In today's nursing world, our evidence-based practice (EBP) is much more well rounded than it was in her day, however Florence Nightingale was creating the first version of EBP. Today it is a huge part of not just school, but our work lives as well. Working in a magnet designated hospital, there are a certain number of projects we have to present throughout the year to support our practices as the most scientifically accurate ones. While this is very different from what was occurring in the 1800's, it is based in the same principles. As nursing leaders are often not acknowledged the way Nightingale is, one stood out to me. Linda Richards was the first recognized, professionally trained nurse in the United States. Not only did she establish the first nursing programs here she also established some in Japan.
