In her book Becoming a Manager: Mastery of a New Identity, Harvard Business School professor, Linda Hill, conducted extensive interviews with 19 people in their first year as supervisors or managers. To learn firsthand what it's like to be a manager, interview two managers whom you know, asking them the same questions Hill asked her managers. (The questions are listed below.) Be sure to interview managers with different levels of experience. Interview one person with at least five years' experience as a supervisor/manager and interview another person with no more than 2 years' experience as a supervisor/manager.Step 1:  Ask the supervisors the following questions. Take notes or record their responses for your written report. DO NOT simply have the supervisor write up answers to these questions and submit them or you will not pass. You are to write up a REPORT which includes a discussion of the responses.

  1. What is your name, title, and the company for which you work?
  2. What is your contact phone number and email address for authentication purposes for my professor?
  3. Briefly describe your current position and responsibilities.
  4. What do your subordinates expect from you on the job?
  5. What are the major stresses and challenges you face on the job?
  6. What, if anything, do you dislike about the job?
  7. What do you like best about your job?
  8. What do you think are the critical differences between average managers and top-performing managers?
  9. Think about the skills and knowledge that you need to be effective in your job. What are they, and how did you acquire them?
  10. What have been your biggest mistakes thus far? Could you have avoided them? If so, how?
