QUESTION 1
Network topology is the network structure that is based on the physical/logical arrangement of network devices on the network. It can be used to demonstrate the configuration of cables, computers, and other peripherals. Suppose you are working as a technician in a company, and your manager asked you to do the following:
a) Draw a topology diagram to connect 5 computers assuming:
i. Star topology
ii. Full mesh topology
iii. Bus topology
a) What cabling method you will use in the star topology to connect the devices? Justify your answers.
b) Which one of the above topologies can provide higher privacy? Justify your answer.
QUESTION 2
Standards and protocols ensure that hardware and software produced by different vendors can work together. For example, without networking standards, it would be difficult-if not impossible-to develop networks that easily share information. Examples of networks standards and protocols are OSI model and TCP/IP model
a) List three differences (if any) between the OSI model and TCP/IP models.
b) Which of the OSI layers handles each of the following:
i. Breaking the transmitted bit stream into frames.
ii. Determining which route to use for sending packets.
c) When a system has a permanent part and a removable part, such as a diskette drive and the diskette, it is important that the system be standardized, so that different companies can make both the permanent and removable parts and have everything work together.
i. Give three examples from the computer industry (apart from the examples given in this question) where such international standards exist.
ii. Now give three examples outside the computer industry where such international standards exist.
QUESTION 3
Read the scenario below, then solve the questions a, b and c accordingly:
There is an organisation called QX company that is now lunched in Oman. Currently, there are 120 employees distributed in three departments namely: Production and Supply, Sales, and HR. All servers are located in a separate room where connection to Omantel service provider can be found. The Department of Production and Supply is located next to the server room and has 80 computers. The Department of HR has 15 computers and located 250 meters away from the server room. Finally, the Department of Sales has 10 client computers and located 120 meters away from the server room.
Each and every person needs two data points at their desk whether it's an office, room cubicle or open plan cubicle. The building needs also wireless connectivity. Furthermore, the manager requested that the traffic from the Department of Production and Supply should not interfere with those from the Sales and HR departments.
a) List the five steps required to be followed in network planning steps. Furthermore, you are required to roughly write your plan for the first two steps based on your understanding of the course and the above description of the scenario.
b) Draw the basic horizontal cabling for the company
c) Using Hierarchical Design Model, design the network topology in Packet Tracer with the following requirements:
i. Devices
ii. Cabling (indicate cabling types using solid lines for straight through and dotted lines for crossover)
iii. IP Address, Subnet Mask and Default Gateways
QUESTION 4
Consider the network diagram shown in Figure 1, identify the problems and provide solution for the following:
a) Laptop0 cannot establish a connection with PC0.
b) PC2 cannot ping PC1.
c) Looking at the configuration in Figure 2 and Figure 3, why do Laptop1 cannot connect to the Wireless Router0? Provide solution to the problem.
d) What is the class of the IP addresses shown in Figure 1?

QUESTION 5
Suppose you are working on a networking company. The main role of the company is to design and construct network cabling for organizations, companies, etc. Your manager asked you to prepare a page or a half page comparison between copper cables and fiber optic cables. The comparison should include the maximum distance covered, form of data when transmitted, material composition and reaction against interference.
