Ethical dilemmas are very common in the healthcare field. One of the examples of an ethical dilemma that one person could face and another wouldn't are more commonly surrounding a patients religious beliefs and the treatments that are taking place. Some patients religious beliefs keep them from engaging in certain treatments due to those beliefs. In my example, you have a nurse who is working with a patient in the emergency room, the patient she has been assigned has certain religious beliefs, and with those beliefs their parents are not allowing the nurse to give medicine to the young patient. The nurse is trying to convince the parents that the interventions she is going to do will help their child live. The parents are refusing the treatment due to their beliefs. This is causing an ethical dilemma with the nurse as she knows that the parents have the right to refuse treatment based on their beliefs. The nurse knows this, however since it is a child she is having an emotional battle, due to the fact that she is a mother as well. She goes to get the attending in the er to try to utilize her to convince the patients parents to authorize the treatment to help the child live. The attending knows the nurse is having an ethical dilemma, however she knows the rights of the patients parents and sides with them in not giving the treatment due to their religious beliefs. This is probably an example of one of the most common ethical dilemmas you will see in the medical field. Staff who know the rights of a patient, however they have a battle between their emotional connection and what is right.
