Question
Based on our knowledge of temperament and the policies that Blooming Flowers has in place regarding drop off, I do not believe that my friend should have his son attempt to "tough it out" at Blooming Flowers. I feel that perhaps with the characteristics my friend has described regarding his son's temperament, that it is best for him to find a facility that has a different philosophy on drop-off, as well as a more inclusive approach to parental involvement. All children have their own individual difference in temperament as well as other environmental factors that impact their ability to adjust to new situations. If my friend chooses to continue to send his son to Blooming Flowers, I believe there could be a long-term negative impact on his son. I feel that it is important for my friend to make adjustments to his son's environment to meet the needs of his son's individual temperament and that is why Blooming Flowers is not a good fit for his son. Thomas and Chess' goodness-of-fit concept, explains that there is a degree to which an individual's temperament is compatible with the demands and expectations of his or her social environment. Meaning that children do best when there is a high goodness of fit between their temperament and their environments. Therefore, in my opinion my friend needs to take his son's temperament into account and find a daycare that better fits the temperament of his child. Perhaps the new daycare should allow my friend to stay longer each day to help his son adjust. However, it is also important for my friend to take into consideration that any new situation will require an adjustment period but it is worth it to find a new day care that better fits his son's temperament so there are no long term effects on his future.
