Case Study : Bacterial Infection

Ms. Jackson is a new patient at the clinic. Six months ago, she had a kidney transplant and was prescribed immunosuppressant drugs. She has been doing reasonably well and spending much of her time outdoors in the sun gardening. Recently, she has been experiencing repeated bacterial infections due to resistant strains and has been switched to different antibiotics throughout the last six months. The healthcare provider suspects a kidney infection. She was subsequently admitted to the hospital and was given gentamicin 300 mg daily by IV infusion.

1. Based on her condition and the specific medication given, the healthcare provider would need to test the patient and monitor her. What kind of test would you be monitoring?

2. She is showing signs of hearing loss due to gentamicin therapy and the healthcare provider will need to change her antibiotic. Name a medication that you believe they could order in its place.

3. List the adverse effects of sulfonamides that would be problematic for Ms. Jackson.
