Question

Punishment shows one that they will not get a positive outcome if they don't do what is asked. If the owner is asking the puppy to sit but he does not, he's not going to get a treat. The dog will see when he gets praised for doing things, therefore he will eventually sit when asked because he knows he will get a treat. My friend should first decide what she feels is the appropriate punishment whether its vocal, removal of something, using restraint with the puppy, or giving possibly a timeout of it. My friend also needs to be mindful of when she is giving the punishment because if there is too much time between the command and the punishment, the punishment may become ineffective (Domjan, 2015). Once her puppy has earned it's command, she can give him positive reinforcement such as a treat of a toy for completing the task asked of it. Showing the dog praise or giving it something he likes can help develop a positive learning experience.

Additional comments: Your friend has decided to use punishment as a means of training her new puppy. What are three things she must do to ensure that the aversive stimuli used will alter the pup's behavior? Detailed explanation.
