The patient, a 40 year old male, was diagnosed with acquired hemolytic anemia, autoimmune type with warm-reactive antibodies (warm type), and has been treated with glucocorticoids (prednisone). The patient failed to respond to this medication, so it was stopped two months ago. The patient is also under treatment for systemic lupus erythematous. Given the agressive nature of his anemia, he was advised to be admitted to the hospital and have a total splenectomy to eliminate the body's further destruction of red blood cells. The open, total splenectomy was performed without complications, and the patient was discharged to be followed up in the physician's and surgeon's offices.
