Question

Barbara is a 32 year-old female with autism spectrum disorder. She resides at a group home with four other residents, and three other staff members. Staff encouraged her to come due to irritability towards residence and staff. After assessment, provide recommendations of medication approved to treat autism related irritability. Barbara declines medication stating she doesn't want to take anything. What would be the next step? Do not prescribe medication as the patient declines. Refer patient to IQ testing to determine if she could make this decision. Provide patient with the risks and benefits of not taking the medication and the risks and benefits of taking the medication to ensure the patient understands her choice. Patient will need to be taken to the emergency department as her behaviors are making others distressed, and she does not have insight into her behaviors or decisions.
