On page 29 of the Australian Guidelines for the Prevention and Control of Infection in Healthcare, there is a list of standard precautions to be used by healthcare workers to reduce the likelihood of infection.

The following standard precautions are listed:

• Hand hygiene as consistent with the 5 moments for hand hygiene section 3.1.1 (pp29-47)
• The use of appropriate personal protective equipment section 3.3 (pp120-135)
• The safe use and disposal of sharps section 3.1.2 (pp48-55)
• Routine environmental cleaning section 3.1.3 (pp55-83) and section 6.1(pp250-255)
• Reprocessing of re-usable medical equipment and instruments section 3.1.4 (pp83-90)
• Respiratory hygiene and cough etiquette section 3.1.5 (90-91)
• Aseptic technique section 3.1.6 (pp91-95)
• Waste management section 3.1.7 (pp95-95)
• Appropriate handling of linen section 3.1.8 (p96)
