Romblon is known for its beautiful marble. To satisfy the increasing demands for marble, enterprising residents intensified the marble quarrying. They put up marble tile factories near the quarrying sites. These factories dump marble chips into the nearby seashore. These marble chips eventually made the shores shallow, making it difficult for the big boats to dock. The boats had to load and unload passengers and cargoes farther from the shore. Passengers had to pay for banca ride from the landing side to the shore. Aside from this, many children near the quarrying sites suffered from chronic respiratory ailments which doctors attributed to the marble dust. The residents brought these problems to the attention of the municipal government but their complaint remained unheeded.
