At 1000 K, the total equilibrium vapor pressure over liquid bismuth metal is 4.84 x 10-5 atm. It is known from mass spectrometric experiments that the vapor phase contains both atomic, Bi(g), and diatomic, Bi2(g), species. In fact the experiments reveal that the equilibrium partial pressure of the Bi(g) is 2.07 x 10-5 atm and the equilibrium partial pressure of the Bi2(g) is 2.77 x 10-5 atm. At what total pressure of bismuth vapor is the partial pressure of Bi(g) just twice that of Bi2(g) at 1000 K? How many phases are present in the system for this situation?
